The Arizona Diamondbacks lose Juan Gutierrez to Tommy John Surgery

The Diamondbacks have lost 28-year old righty reliever Juan Gutierrez for the rest of this season and probably all of the 2012 season as he will undergo Tommy John Surgery soon. Gutierrez pitched in 20 games (0 starts) for the Diamondbacks this year and he was 0-0 with a 5.40 ERA and a 1.69 WHIP. He has now pitched in 143 games (0 starts) in his first three years with Arizona and he is 4-9 with 24 saves, a 4.62 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Here’s to hoping he has a full recovery and gets back to pitching with the D-Backs in 2013.

The Arizona Diamondbacks lose Jason Marquis for huge chunk of the rest of the year

The Diamondbacks will be without 32-year old righty starting pitcher Jason Marquis for the next 4-6 weeks after he fractured his right leg throwing a pitch against the Mets. Marquis has started 3 games for the D-Backs so far this year and he is 0-1 with a 9.53 ERA and a 2.28 WHIP. He has given up 22 hits in his first 11 1/3 innnigs for the Diamondbacks. Marquis has pitched in 23 games (all starts) overall this year for the Nationals and the D-Backs and he is 8-6 with a 4.43 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. The Diamondbacks have called up 24-year old lefty starting pitcher Wade Miley, who came into this season as the Diamondbacks #8 prospect according to Baseball America. Miley has pitched in 22 games (all starts) in AA+AAA-ball so far this year and he is 8-3 with a 4.30 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP. He has now pitched in 80 games (73 starts) in his first four years in the minors and he is 24-21 with a 3.69 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. Veteran lefty Zach Duke will be a fallback option if Miley isn’t up to the challenge of starting in the majors right now.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed Xavier Nady on the D.L.

The Diamondbacks have placed 32-year old righty swinging 1B/OF Xavier Nady on the 15-day disabled list with a fractured left hand. He is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks due to this injury. Nady has played in 82 games for the D-Backs so far this year and he is 51 for 206 (.248 avg, .646 OPS) with 26 runs scored, 4 homers, 35 RBIs and 2 stolen bases. The D-Backs hope he can return after around 4 weeks because they will need all hands on the deck to hold off the Giants in the N.L. West.

The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed Geoff Blum back on the D.L.

The Diamondbacks have placed 38-year old switch-hitting infielder Geoff Blum on the 15-day disabled list due to a fractured pinkie finger. Blum has played in 7 games for the Diamondbacks so far this year and he is 3 for 15 (.200 avg, .717 OPS) with 2 runs scored, 1 homer and 2 RBIs. The Diamondbacks have called up 25-year old righty swinging outfielder Collin Cowgill to replace Blum on the roster. Cowgill came into this season as the D-Backs’ #18 prospect according to Baseball America. Cowgill has played in 98 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 140 for 395 (.354 avg, .984 OPS) with 95 runs scored, 13 homers, 70 RBIs and 30 stolen bases. He has now played in 360 games in his first four years in the minors and he is 418 for 1,397 (.299 avg, .873 OPS) with 275 runs scored, 47 homers, 234 RBIs and 72 stolen bases. Cowgill will likely have a shot at a lot of P.T. in LF if he continues to hit at the major league level.

Stephen Drew is likely out for the rest of the season for the Arizona Diamondbacks

28-year old lefty swinging shortstop Stephen Drew is likely out for the rest of the 2011 season after he fractured his right ankle sliding into home plate last night. Drew has played in 85 games for the D-Backs so far this year and he is 81 for 321 (.252 avg, .713 OPS) with 44 runs scored, 5 homers, 45 RBIs and 4 stolen bases. The Diamondbacks will likely be looking for a shortstop in the trade market but they will go with 33-year old righty swinging Willie Bloomquist for now. Bloomquist has played in 50 games for the D-Backs so far this year and he is 45 for 166 (.271 avg, .662 OPS) with 21 runs scored, 2 homers, 11 RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Bloomquist will add speed to the lineup but little else as the D-Backs are going to miss Drew.
