The Diamondbacks have placed 25-year old switch hitting infielder Tony Abreu on the 15-day disabled list with a left wrist sprain. Abreu has played in 30 games this season for the D-Backs and he is 21 of 67 (.313 avg, .722 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 5 RBIs and 1 stolen base. The Diamondbacks have recalled 29-year old righty swinging infielder Ryan Roberts from AAA to replace Abreu on the active roster. Roberts has played in 43 games in AAA-ball this year and he is 44 of 160 (.275 avg, .806 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 3 homers, 26 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Roberts played in 110 games for the D-Backs last year in which he was 85 of 305 (.279 avg, .783 OPS) with 41 runs scored, 7 homers, 25 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. The D-Backs fully expect Roberts to do a good job while Abreu is out of action.

The Arizona Diamondbacks lose Clay Zavada for the year

The D-Backs have lost 25-year old lefty reliever Clay Zavada for the year due to Tommy John Surgery. The D-Backs knew something was wrong with Zavada based on his pitching in AAA this year. Zavada pitched in 5 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this year and he was 0-1 with a 30.00 ERA and a 5.33 WHIP. He gave up 6 hits and walked 10 batters in only 3 innings in the minors this season. This hurts the Diamondbacks as they were planning to bring Zavada up at some point this season as he pitched pretty good for them last year. Zavada pitched in 49 games (0 starts) for the D-Backs last season and he was 3-3 with a 3.35 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP as he whiffed 52 batters in only 51 innings in 2009.

The Arizona Diamondbacks place two pitchers on the D.L.

The Diamondbacks have placed righty starting pitcher Kris Benson and 29-year old righty reliever Leo Rosales on the 15-day disabled list. Benson has a case of right shoulder soreness. He has started 3 games for the D-Backs this season and he is 1-1 with a 5.14 ERA and a 1.71 WHIP. The D-Backs have called up 24-year old righty Kevin Mulvey from AAA to replace Benson in the starting rotation. Mulvey has started 4 games in AAA-ball this season and he was 0-1 with a 4.05 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. Mulvey has not been able to handle pitching in the majors to this point but maybe things will be different this time around. Leo Rosales has a sprained right foot. He has pitched in 9 games (0 starts) for the D-Backs this season and he is 2-0 with a 8.10 ERA and a 2.10 WHIP. 24-year old righty reliever Daniel Stange has been called up from AAA to replace Rosales in the pen. Stange has pitched in 8 games (0 starts) in AAA-ball this season and he is 3-1 with a 2.89 ERA and a 1.07 WHIP. He has only given up 5 hits in 9 1/3 innings in AAA this season. It’s not like the D-Backs are losing Cy Young and Jim Palmer here so maybe Mulvey and Stange will give the pitching staff a shot in the arm.

The Arizona Diamondbacks place Conor Jackson on the D.L.

The Diamondbacks have placed 27-year old righty swinging LF Conor Jackson on the 15-day disabled list with a right hamstring strain. Jackson has played in 11 games for the D-Backs in which he is 12 for 45 (.267 avg, .642 OPS) with 3 runs scored, 2 RBIs and 1 stolen base. 22-year old lefty swinging Gerardo Parra will replace Jackson in the starting lineup and he played well for the D-Backs last year. He has played in 10 games for the Diamondbacks this season in which he is 5 for 22 (.227 avg, .625 OPS) with 3 doubles and 2 RBIs. The D-Backs have recalled 26-year old righty reliever Esmerling Vasquez to replace Jackson on the active roster. He has already pitched in 3 games (0 starts) for the D-Backs this season and he is 0-0 with a 9.00 ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.

The Arizona Diamondbacks lose Miguel Montero to injury

Blogged under General, Front Page, Injuries, Bloglockers by chinmusic on Sunday 11 April 2010 at 10:31 pm

The Diamondbacks have placed 26-year old lefty swinging, starting catcher Miguel Montero on the 15-day disabled list with a torn meniscus in his right knee. He will miss at least one month and it will be a lot longer if he needs surgery to repair his knee. Montero has played in 4 games this season for the D-Backs and he is 6 for 12 (.500 avg, 1.122 OPS) with 1 run scored and 3 RBIs. This is a shame for Montero who just took over the starting job from Chris Snyder last year. Snyder will be the starting catcher until Montero is ready to return to action. Before today, Snyder played in 2 games this season for the D-Backs in which he was 1 for 6 (.167 avg, .333 OPS). Snyder must have been happy that he is the starting catcher for the Diamondbacks once again because he had a monster game today. He went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored, a double, a homer and 5 RBIs in a D-Backs win over the Pirates. The D-Backs have recalled 26-year old righty swinging catcher John Hester to back up Snyder. Hester played in his first game this season for the D-Backs and he was 0 for 1. He played in 15 games for the Diamondbacks last season in which he was 7 for 28 (.250 avg, .729 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 4 RBIs.

UPDATE: Montero will be out 4-6 weeks which should make the D-Backs feel better.
