The D-Backs have acquired 24-year old switch hitting 2B/3B Tony Abreu as the player to be named later to complete the Jon Garland trade. Abreu played in 6 games for the Dodgers this season and he was 2 for 8 (.250 avg, .705 OPS) with 1 RBI. He has also played in 72 games in AA+AAA ball this season and he was 97 for 291 (.333 avg, .891 OPS) with 43 runs scored, 10 homers, 49 RBIs and 3 stolen bases. In two years with the Dodgers, Abreu has played in 65 games in which he is 47 for 174 (.270 avg, .714 OPS) with 19 runs scored, 2 homers and 18 RBIs. Abreu should help out the D-Backs immediately and he might even pry the starting job at 2B away from Ryan Roberts.

The Arizona Diamondbacks acquire Kevin Mulvey from the Twins

The D-Backs have acquired 24-year old righty starting pitcher Kevin Mulvey from the Twins to complete the Jon Rauch trade. Mulvey was the Twins’ #8 rated prospect heading into this season according to Baseball America. He did not pitch well for the Twins in his limited opportunity this season working in 2 games in relief in which he was 0-0 with a 27.00 ERA and a 4.50 WHIP. But, in AAA he was solid starting 24 games in which he was 5-8 with a 3.93 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP. The Diamondbacks should just call Mulvey up and let him take over Jon Garland’s spot in the rotation in September. This was a good trade for the D-Backs as Mulvey has a nice upside.

The Arizona Diamondbacks lose Chad Qualls for the season

The D-Backs have lost closer Chad Qualls for the rest of the season due to a dislocated knee cap. Qualls pitched in 51 games (0 starts) this season for the D-Backs and he was 2-2 with 24 saves, a 3.63 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP. He whiffed 45 hitters while only walking 7 batters in 52 innings which showed he had solid stuff. Juan Gutierrez will likely replace Qualls as the closer. He has pitched in 54 games (0 starts) this season and he is 3-3 with 2 saves, a 4.17 ERA and a 1.44 WHIP. Gutierrez has walked 27 batters in 58 1/3 innings this season so his control could be a issue. But he has whiffed 55 batters this season so he has the potential to do a good job. Losing Qualls will likely hurt the D-Backs the last month of the season as he’s a much better pitcher than Gutierrez is.

The Arizona Diamondbacks trade Jon Garland to the Dodgers

The Diamondbacks have traded 29-year old righty starting pitcher Jon Garland to the Dodgers for a player to be named later. Garland started 27 games for the Diamondbacks this season and he was 8-11 with a 4.29 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP. Garland was just signed for this season so it will be interesting to see what kind of player the D-Backs get back from the Dodgers.
