The Diamondbacks have claimed 27-year old righty reliever Blaine Boyer off waivers from the Cardinals. Boyer has pitched in 18 games (0 starts) for the Braves and Cardinals this season and he is 0-1 with a 7.31 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. He has now pitched in 144 games (0 starts) in his major league career and he is 6-9 with 1 save, a 5.33 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. Don’t expect much out of Boyer as he’s not much of a major league pitcher.

The Diamondbacks better get their act together soon or they will be forced to look towards the future. Position players like Eric Byrnes, Felipe Lopez and catcher Chris Snyder could get traded. On the pitching side, starters Doug Davis and Jon Garland as well as righty reliever Jon Rauch seem to be the most likely players to get traded. The D-Backs need some more youth and those guys all likely have some value to contenders.

Justin Upton and Mark Reynolds are hitting the heck out of the baseball for the D-Backs right now. Upton has played in 50 games for the Diamondbacks this season and he is 58 for 180 (.322 avg, 1.000 OPS) with 34 runs scored, 10 homers, 33 RBIs and 7 stolen bases. Upton has the potential to be better than his brother with the Rays because of his power stick and ability to hit for a good average despite not having his brother’s speed. Reynolds has played in 52 games this season for the D-Backs and he is 50 for 193 (.259 avg, .873 OPS) with 32 runs scored, 13 homers, 32 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. The speed is a surprise but Reynolds has a lot in common with Mike Schmidt and the D-Backs would love for his career to mirror his.

22-year old lefty swinging outfielder Gerardo Parra was the #2 prospect in the D-Backs’ organization coming into this season and he’s been showing why since he has been called up. Parra has played in 19 games for the D-Backs this season and he is 23 for 77 (.299 avg, .800 OPS) with 11 runs scored, 1 homer and 16 RBIs. Parra gives the D-Backs a glimpse of their future and the future is now.
