Brandon Webb has been outstanding this season and he deserves to be the Cy Young winner based on his win total. He has started 33 games for the D-Backs this season and he is 22-7 with a 3.24 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. His main competitor for the award will be Tim Lincecum of the Giants who has also had a fantastic season for a poor team. He has probably outpitched Webb this season but voters like win totals. It will be interesting to see who wins this award.

Adam Dunn is playing well for the Arizona Diamondbacks

Adam Dunn has played well since coming over from the Reds last month but he isn’t making a impact quite like Manny Ramirez is in LA. Dunn has played in 28 games for the D-Backs so far and he is 23 for 89 (.258 avg, .906 OPS) with 14 runs scored, 4 homers and 16 RBIs. Those numbers aren’t bad but the D-Backs need him to get hot as they have been wasting a lot of decent pitching lately.

The Arizona Diamondbacks replace Brandon Lyon as the closer

The D-Backs have replaced Brandon Lyon as the closer with Chad Qualls and this is a move that should have been made a few weeks ago. Lyon has pitched in 55 games for the D-Backs this season and he is 2-5 with 26 saves, a 5.23 ERA and a 1.58 WHIP. They D-Backs have lost 8 of their last 10 games falling behind the red hot Dodgers by 4.5 games so this move could be too late coming. Qualls has pitched in 70 games for the D-Backs this season and he is 4-8 with 3 saves, a 3.11 ERA and a 1.14 WHIP. He will do a good job in the closer’s role for the D-Backs.

The Arizona Diamondbacks designate Emiliano Fruto for assignment

The D-Backs have designated 24-year old right handed pitcher Emiliano Fruto for assignment. Fruto pitched in 49 games (4 starts) in AAA this season for the D-Backs and he was 6-6 with 2 saves, a 5.26 ERA and a 1.65 WHIP. Fruto had control issues that held him back with the D-Backs as he walked 59 batters in 89 innings of work in AAA. The D-Backs likely won’t lose much sleep over letting him go.
